Volvo EX90: A First Taste of Unfinished Brilliance

Volvo Ex90 First Drive: Not Fully Baked

The Volvo Ex90 is a promising addition to the electric vehicle market, offering a unique blend of Scandinavian design, advanced safety features, and impressive performance. However, my recent first drive experience with the Ex90 left me feeling that while it shows great potential, it is not quite fully baked yet.

First and foremost, the design of the Ex90 is undoubtedly striking. True to Volvo’s reputation for sleek and modern design, the Ex90 features clean lines, a minimalist interior, and quality materials throughout. The large panoramic glass roof adds to the open and airy feel of the cabin, emphasizing the spaciousness of the vehicle. However, upon closer inspection, some elements of the interior design felt slightly unfinished. The placement of certain controls and buttons seemed awkward, and the overall layout could benefit from further refinement.

In terms of performance, the Ex90 delivers a smooth and quiet driving experience. The instant torque provided by the electric powertrain results in brisk acceleration, making merging onto highways and passing other vehicles a breeze. The Ex90’s regenerative braking system also works seamlessly, allowing for efficient energy recapture during deceleration. However, during my test drive, I noticed some inconsistencies in the vehicle’s handling and suspension tuning. While the Ex90 generally felt composed and comfortable over smooth roads, it exhibited noticeable body roll and a lack of precision in cornering. This compromised the overall driving dynamics and left room for improvement.

Safety has always been a top priority for Volvo, and the Ex90 is no exception. The vehicle comes equipped with a host of advanced safety features, including collision avoidance systems, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist. These technologies work together to help prevent accidents and protect both occupants and pedestrians. During my test drive, I was impressed by the Ex90’s suite of safety features and their seamless integration into the driving experience. However, there were instances where the collision avoidance system seemed overly sensitive, triggering unnecessary alerts and interventions.

Overall, my first drive experience with the Volvo Ex90 was a mix of highs and lows. While the vehicle excels in terms of design, performance, and safety, there are areas where further refinement is needed. From interior layout to driving dynamics, the Ex90 could benefit from additional fine-tuning to fully realize its potential. With continued development and updates, the Ex90 has the potential to become a standout option in the competitive electric SUV market.
